Here;s the southern pole. It has barely moved when compared to the Northern one:
Here's a chart showing southern ozone hole locations from 1979-92:
Note the consistency of the location of the hole - because the charged particles are hitting thr troposphere. Look at 1988 and you see that the ozone hole "healed" itself in 1 year to 1981 levels and then reverted the next year! Chemicals, soot and CFC levels were clearly not responsible and what scientists discovered is that the ozone hole is a normal seasonal effect - largely caused by particularly cold temperatures which condense water vapor and permit more charged particles to break up O3 into O2 & O. And then with these molecules floating around, UV radiation recombines them forming ozone again.
Look again at the ozone hole chart, look closely at how the hole cycles larger one year and smaller the next year - almost like a beating heart! This is the natural cycle the ozone layer exhibits at our poles as it is broken down - not by manmade chemicals - but charged particles flowing the lines of force of our magnetosphere to our poles.
Here's a map of the northern ozone layer from 1979-98:
Here we see that the ozone layer is still robust next to the southern one. Why is that? Do all CFCs head south for the winter like migrating birds? Does the industrialized northern part of the world get a special rate on southern delivery? No, it's because ozone holes are created by charged particles - not CFCs. And the northern (+) magnetosphere pole attracts negatively charged particles whereas the southern pole attracts positively charged particles
Like a bar magnet:
Earth's southern pole and ozone layer is bombarded by positively charged particles and solar variance drives this cyclic breakdown.
The northern pole repels these particles and so that is why, even in the CFC producing, mega-industrialized northern hemisphere, ozone depletion is markedly less significant. However with the shift of the northern magnetosphere pole to a colder climate we will see a small persistent hole develop (prediction!) right over the arctic for the next five to ten years. This will melt more polar ice. As the northern magnetosphere pole moves on, passing the arctic, I expect the ozone hole will close again, and seasonal ice will be larger once again.
All the while environmentalists will scream and shout about this new ozone hole in the north. Icebergs will melt. China will be blamed. New treaties will be drawn up - and all for naught because even some of the best climatologists don't understand what's really going on and will be nonplussed when, without any intervention by man, the self-same ozone hole will close up.
Of course environmentalists will claim it is pollution control that has made the difference, and try to take credit for it - even though anybody who reads this post will know exactly what forces cause ozone hole formation and melting ice.
Pollution control is noble - but it has statistically nothing to do with the planet's ozone holes, melting ice shelfs and global warming.
