In America we called them "vacuum tubes". ("Valves" in the UK)
I was thinking of just dumping the machine in their lap, without documentation. That's what I referred to by " without a detailed description written specifically with their knowledge base in mind". Still there is that wonderful story about when one of the first microprocessors was shown at a conference, some engineer was quoted as saying "I know what it does, I just don't know why anyone would WANT to do that."
And I'll be the first to confess that even though I've been working with IT since 1964, with a thirteen year stint as a professional scientific/engineering programmer, eight of them in Silicon Valley, I was totally unable to predict that the personal computer would ever take off as a consumer product. I remember the first time I heard of the internet
(in the early '90s) my comment was "it sounds like some kind of CB radio for geeks."
