Quant Suff!
In Alfred Bester's "The Stars my Destination", shipwrecked astronaut Gully Foyle is rescued by the "Scientific People" who are the descendants of a colony of researchers marooned generations earlier on an isolated asteroid. They are essentially a cargo cult in white lab coats, with barely enough technical knowledge left to keep their colony airtight.
