I was burning to have one, but...
...as a young father with an unworking wife, they were beyond my means for many years. When I bought my C64 (which was pretty reasonable in price), I felt crushingly guilty for using that much of the family's resources on something that would benefit mainly me.
At the time, the invasion of PC clones and their effect on prices did not occur to me as a remote possibility. But using my experience as a model: there was a huge demand just waiting for the price to come down.
