It's depressing that I have to go to this kind of effort, but here's one view on it, and a commentary with a lot more background information.
Thompson's website has already been caught generating one phony source ("Terry Wilkinson") and probably more. The only people who seriously treated it as news were websites that normally treat rumors, innuendo, and outright fabrication as news. You wouldn't expect to see a lot of refutation from sensible people any more than you would see a lot of organized refutation online about Bigfoot sightings.
And when the netroots pick up something like this, it's replicated hundreds of times, over and over again. Finding any other information on the subject takes time.
