The internet would be more robust if the fastest modems, like my 5 Mbps modem, could connect directly without an IP. It would be great if all I had to do was pick up the phone, dial my friend's phone number, and when I hear the electronic 'noise' flip a switch that directly connects my modem to his modem. Bypass the IP completely. It would be a heck of a lot cheaper too. I think cell phones are kinda like that, have similar Peer-to-Peer type capability. Although I have to admit, my friends probably don't have much stuff to share. But the capability should be built into every modem. Without that we're dependent on IPs and ultra-slow fax machines.
