My earliest experience with modems

I was 9-10 years old and I was in the 5th grade. It was about 1984-85. My classroom at school had a Commodore 64 computer with a couple games on it. Everyone in the class took turns and signed up to use the computer. Like myself, another kid in the class was particularly skilled with the computer. The reason of course is that the C64 wasn't the first computer available for home or school use. My family also had an Apple TRS-80 computer and I had learned quite a bit about the Basic programming language. I was able to reprogram some games for fun. A friend of mine made the astonishing statement that he used his phone to trade games on his computer. I'm like, "What?! That's impossible." And he explained that he had an answering machine with a tape recorder that recorded all the beeps and chirps from incoming calls. Then he had some kind of hook-up to his computer. Overall he had hundreds of C64 games on his computer that he got from friends in far away places. Later, I learned that alot of other people were doing the same thing, and everyone I knew at school knew someone who was doing it.
