"The USA again an oil exporter?
Well you can always dream.
I have a suspicion that Indian reservations in
the USA, and American military bases, may hold large untapped
oil reserves. "
Yes, but my point was we wouldn't need find and tap new reserves and we could *still* be an oil exporter. Now, in the article I linked to it said we wouldn't need to use any domestic or foreign oil reserves. Instead we could liquidify coal as part the function of nuclear power plants- and since US has largest known reserve of coal that could be used for transportation uses.
[Btw, US is currently a coal exporter [non shipped coal is, I believe, somewhere around $50 per ton and Europeans are paying additional $50 per ton to ship US coal across the Atlantic.]
But politically and economically it would probably work out that we simply stop importing oil and rely on domestic sources and NOT export much oil [I'm saying we could, if this was desired]. In addition, other countries could build more nuclear plant and in some cases also liquidify coal.
One advantage of using nuclear power to liquidify coal is there might more political will to build nuclear plants in areas in which normally, since coal is so cheap, wouldn't desire nuclear plants.
