It is not a majority of the electorate, not even a majority of the Republicans, but it is still a lot of people, and any Republican candidate is going to have to appeal to these people to get the support of his party.
Even those Republicans who are aghast and insulted by this rhetoric are not likely to protest against it too publicly, lest they be attacked as RINOs or The Establishment, or "squishy". In the Conservative Bizarro Universe, apostasy is more to be feared (and more severely punished) than heresy.
The GOP is undergoing mitosis right now. It is not a pretty process, and although I am convinced a majority Americans, or even of Republicans, will not tolerate this drift into fascism, it leads to an instability that any unexpected crisis or emergency can precipitate--and any demagogue--can exploit.
Its a long time to the election. Any military disaster, terrorist attack or economic crash could give someone like Cruz or Carson or Trump just the leverage he needs to be the last man left standing.
