By the time someone goes to the trouble of finding out the facts, it's way too late. Often even when you tell people the facts, they'll discard them in favor of the attractive lie anyway.
In the internet age, by the time the truth gets its boots on, a lie can be halfway to Alpha Centauri.
The belief that there is no such thing as objective fact is also dangerous. In the case of the bad numbers on the murder chart, the facts are easily found, and this is true in many cases. A few years ago, during a gun crime discussion here, I found and presented the numbers that basically showed that the vast majority of homicide victims are killed by people in their own demographic, across the board. Unfortunately, the great interactive graphic of the statistics is now behind a paywall, but the basic numbers can be found in several places.
