I don't actually believe Republicans are necessarily racist--or homophobic, or misogynistic, either. And I don't think they are necessarily ignorant. Some are black, some are gay, some are women and some of them are very clever. What has happened is that the GOP has depended on and carefully cultivated the votes of the racist, homophobic and misogynistic, as well as the ignorant, to help keep them in power. The reason that Obama provoked such unreasoning hatred and deliberate obstruction and sabotage was not so much who he was, or even what he did, but that the American people voted for him TWICE. The GOP realized that the coalition that was referred to by Lee Atwater re the "Southern Strategy" was no longer enough to guarantee Republican victories in national elections. They could no longer count on the Bubbas and the Bunkers.
