People claim to want answers. To "address the actual problem." Any gasbrain can march down a street yelling "Hey Hey, Ho, Ho," over and over again. Anybody can say "this shit has to stop."
To find answers, maybe you find out where the "shit" started. Where does the power of the city leaders come from? How is it preserved over years? Do violent police help that preservation? Is police brutality inherent in any vertical power system? Are there counterexamples?
What's the role of poverty and real crime rates in this? More crime, more cops, more confrontation.
Why can cops in some countries go almost unarmed, while cops in other countries need armor? Is the armor part of the problem? How about the recent trend of arming American cops with heavy military equipment? Why did that start?
When did Officer O'Malley, swinging his nightstick and talking to store owners, turn into something that looks like Robocop and drives a tank? Look at the chart:
Did Officer O'Malley, in post-war America, really live in more dangerous times than Officer Iron Man?
Here's another observation from Mother Jones from a different direction. Is this part of it?
Finally, cui bono? Is there anyone in the system who thrives by keeping this environment toxic?
