Is it something tangible that scientists can look at and dissect or put it in a bottle and examine it under the microscope?
I don't think so, I think that it is composed of electrical impulses within the brain, then what are electronic impulses made of, they could be energy, but what is energy.
Energy (the kinetic variety) cannot exist without something that moves, so something in the brain is moving all the time in order to generate the imagination.
That's my simplified explanation of imagination.
As for the beginning;
I believe that there was a beginning (long long ago and far far away;-) the creator (God if you will) created space and [protomass] that filled all of the space, the protomass did not contain kinetic energy at the beginning, but when the creator caused the protomass to move, it made it possible for everything in the universe to come into existence.
For a better explanation of protomass see the web site:

That is my simplified explanation.
Since there was a beginning there can be an end, when that end will be no one knows.
