I have no problem with a main character dying but usually a good storyteller finds something uplifting about what occurs such as the grandfather dying freeing up the daughter to finally live her own life.

Now true stories as in the case you site obviously have to stay true to history. I have no problem with that but I can choose whether to watch them based on my expectations. Take "Perfect Storm". I know it was a powerful movie but I already knew the ending and chose not to see that one. However, I knew the ending to the Titanic and had no problem seeing that.

I think where you feel betrayed is when you don't see it coming, where they invest you into bonding with someone and then boom the guy just disappears for no apparent reason. I feel manipulated then.
