re: Could Be...

At the age of 53+, one could say the same about me. But the telescope sees deep history...we began as animals a couple of million years back, and physically we're still animals. But we started developing social skills that characterize the primates, and a prevailing theory in human evolution is that around that time, prehuman females began selecting the males who could reproduce, and in so doing, shaped the species. On that understanding, I'm not saying that women haven't exerted control over human mating practices since before the dawn of time, but rather that they gained absolute control--the power to say "no" and have it backed up by legal enforcement and strong social sanction--only very recently in history. Lacking legal and strong social protections, for most of time, women have exerted their influence and exercized choice more subtly...through the sort of manipulation of biological markets that brings us full circle to where this thread began. It's fascinating to ponder that while, on the surface being the party who must resort to guile to survive sounds like weakness, it led to the fundamental power to shape human genes and the species we became. We were created in Her image, so to speak.
