Mars and More

The UFO phenomenon goes back further than this, with the 1947 sighting by
pilot Kenneth Arnold that is used to mark the "modern" era of UFO sightings.

You could also cite the reports of "dirigibles" seen in the Western US in the
1890s as another one. Right around the time the canals of Mars and the
idea that they were build by intelligent Martians was in full swing.

I am quite convinced there is life beyond Earth and would be happy to embrace
however they are finally found, be it a distant signal (see my post in Space)
or an actual spaceship on the White House lawn. What I will not succumb to
is falling for every UFO report that comes along because Joe Bob Sixpack saw
from funny-lookin' lights in the sky and therefore they must be alien.

This report from Texas is a prime example here. Don't worry, I am not saying that
at least some of these folks didn't see something in the sky, but their descriptions
are so vague it could easily be a military aircraft (and why would the USAF feel
obliged to tell them if they are conducting secret tests?). And this talk about
being in the Bible Belt and it's a sign of the end times doesn't help to put it mildly.

And this eternal excuse making for most UFO reports that they are interdimensional
beings or visitors from our future - that's when this stops being science and
becomes a religion, and no one wins those things.
