This is Flame, after all

But I'm not sure I understand your definition of "try". The US has been participating in air strikes for a while now, and didn't we just "not" put boots on the ground with "advisers" working out of northern Iraq?

I don't think Obama was saying that ISIS can't be defeated militarily, so much as that it's not smart to get tunnel vision and obsess with satisfying explosions alone.

I've been talking about how it's much broader than just hitting back at ISIS for what Farook and Malik did. (Kind of like us hitting Iraq for that time al Qaeda hit us, come to think of it. We don't aim so good.) It's kind of immaterial whether ISIS masterminded or just applauded San Bernardino. Suppose we do destroy ISIS militarily. Will that in any way prevent Muslims living in the West from becoming radicalized, concluding that we hate them for their religion, and striking out at their own societies to strike back?

That's the idea I keep pointing out that we're fighting. The idea that we're the bad guys. You don't fight an idea like that by behaving like Imperial Storm Troopers and flocking to the banner of a heavy-breathing Strong Man/Sith Lord. You really don't.
