With so many people's retirement accounts tied directly to the stock markets, this insane quest for profit to the Nth degree is all of our faults. Illegal labor, outsourcing, cutting corners on quality, and the other ills of our economy are all a result of so many people being stockholders. When those maximized profits fall short, things like this happen.
