Oh, I'm well aware of the problems of this administration and the cronyism employed. But when comparing Bush & Laura to the Clinton's they almost seem squeaky clean.
The economic boom was sustained by letting IPOs emerge and generate huge new stock value - taxable value. The new IPO would make a few venture capitalists rich, a few CEOs would get wealthy and then the first big tax bill on the totally bogus company would be the last thing paid with stockowners dollars before the company would fold up.
The deficit was easily paid for by every stockholding American. It was like getting them to payback the deficit instead when the company's stock crashed from $85 a share to a penny stock.
The SEC was massively negligent "due diligence" was a joke and the millions of little unconnected stockowners took the bite.
That was the 90s "boom economy" an illusion of a trillion dollars worth of "inflated" stock values which could be taxed.
The Bush era has played much the same game - only with real estate values. By letting mortgage rates stay low and encouraging inflated values by stifling the availability of concrete and other building supplies, helped spur massive over-pricing and valuations. That, too, becomes taxable wealth and all the local folks were happy with the new property tax gravy train. The refinancing at the low rates was encouraged and expected and it was expected that folks would take out loans against the new value and that this would keep the economy chugging even though actual incomes were dropping and the illegal immigration problem has grown exponentially all throughout the Bush administrations tenure.
