Well put

and welcome back.

I'm sure you and I agree we'd love to see real evidence that there are visitors from distant space flying ships around our skies. It would mean some incredible technology is possible that our current understanding of physics is incapable of imagining.

I keep adding into the picture the simple fact that, unless these visitors are from our own solar system, they face the same incredible distances we do in venturing out to another star system. These are not simply daunting spans but ones that require nearly unlimited energy to traverse quickly or huge time spans at more attainable speeds.

Now detractors can easily talk about the theoretical physics of warping time and space but I have little faith that any biological body could survive such methods much less the vessels they'd have to ride in. Hell, even if we could succeed in getting a conventional spacecraft up to half the speed of light, even the tiniest of particles hitting it would destroy it and all inside.

Given that, even if these civilizations had the capability of moving across large distances, it would have to be a major resource hog to try to do so. What about exploring our insignificant solar system would be worth that. Also, if they had that technology, what's the odds that the pin they randomly stuck on the map of the universe would fall on our spot?

That makes me cast a doubtful eye on the UFO claims even more than the credibility of the reporters. Once you add in the elements of human nature that you point out, the odds of any sighting being legitimate in my mind are next to nothing.
