As we both know, small angular errors build over distance to bigger and bigger distance error. I'm never satisfied with the resolution of the downhole survey data I work with (0.1 degree) but that's what I get. I never trust reported compass readings below a degree. It's possible to get seconds with a brunton, but I don't believe the average field geologist is going to take the time to do that.
But the overall point is that if two guys see a UFO, they should separate by a short distance and point at the thing. That alone would give them a visual reference of height.
This could be done using many eye-witness estimations of direction - but they would all have to be at the same time! I never see a map with all of the observation directions plotted on them. Maybe Lindy can provide a link to any studies that used a multiple triangulation approach.
