Season one of Deadwood, an HBO production available on DVD at your neighborhood rental store.
It has the same production style as the Rome series, which I know you enjoyed.
The language is foul, the set dusty, the characters gritty, and both sex and violence are present in this examination of the early days of a gold mining camp. We're halfway through season one and are enjoying the series very much.
Of course I've a critical eye for the topic. One of the projects I work on involves the examination of a gold mine from this era in Colorado. I've done tons of research not only on the geology, but the history of the camp as well. So far there has been little to argue with in the recreation of the old west.
Sorry about the hours lost on the trig problem. With Deadwood, you might just lose several evenings.
