I'm not so sure boot-strapping AIs will be feasible as yet. Ever larger number-crunchers seem more likely than actual Artilects. Have you ever read Lem's "Fiasco"? His DEUS computer "of the Ultimate Generation" seems more likely than the Matrioshka Brain scenario that Kurzweil and Bradbury imagine. Speed will limit size and ultimate capacity long before such emerge.
But then the future seems likely to surprise us...
