The usual suspects

Castro's opinion carries little weight with me, but the UN opposition to this technology is interesting. I don't really think food destined for starving populations will be diverted to our gas tanks, what's more likely is that grain grown for fuel would simply not be planted at all if it wasn't for biofuel sales. Corn for the starving is simply not "cost-effective", unless it is a disguise for agricultural subsidies.

At any rate, this suggests that at least the UN can't be blamed for masterminding this one. There's no political conspiracy here, just stupidity, greed and guys in suits.

What really steams me about this whole debate is that the real benefit potential of biofuels, ethanol produced from agricultural waste which is destined to be burned ANYWAY, will be swept under the rug as being "a poor return on investment".
