re: Why don't you tell us what you think?

I think the general opinions colalted within the report are right on the money.

Patriotism should not be taught. What should be taught are the facts, and critical thinking and consideration of those facts. I think blind patriotism is not only unethical, it is also dangerous. I will do what I consider best for me, for my family and my friends, not what it is presumed is best for 'my country'. At an international level, ones country is essentially, the government, and ours is, in a word, crap.

No nation has a perfect history - this one certainly doesn't. Am I proud of the UK? Yes, in some ways. Am I ashamed of things it has done or is doing, equally, yes. Do I believe that the UK was right in the things it has done in the past. Sometimes it was, sometimes it wasn't. It's had a few villans, and a few heros.

Patriotism is defined in some places as the willingness to sacrifice ones life for ones country. That would suggest joining the armed forces, and that is not something I would be prepared to do with the current government - I don't trust them to deploy troops or other military personal responsibly nor equip them appropriately. I would risk my life for my friends and family, but I wouldn't place it in the hands of the government. 'British' is a geographical identity, not a automatic responsibility.

Now it's your turn. Why did you post the story in the first place, what do you think about it, and why do you so often cite stories regarding the UK without actually saying why, or what you think they mean?
