Seemingly, you both sympathised, on many issues.
We often choose to disagree in the final analysis, but this doesn't make either of you "un-friends". I always find it better to explore HOW we disagree with close contacts than to PRETEND we agree in everything.
Keep talking. You already did the difficult stuff. After this, it gets easier and you can add "respect" for each other's positions.
That goes a long way.
Some of us on HZ could usefully learn from that, IMHO...
