I'm curious about something. Now, I know that there would be a 0 (or damned near 0) chance of altering the moon's orbit or changing the days it takes to orbit the Earth; however, I've got a 'what if' question. What if it DID alter the orbit or maybe start the moon rotating on its own axis? Or move it further away from us? How would it affect the Earth?
I know, of course, that the moon is responsible for our tides. Other than that and it's mirror effect for sunlight, brightening up our nights, is there anything else it affects on Earth (other than maybe some weak effect on female hormonal activities in the reproductive cycle)?
I was reading that Earth is slowing (minutely) in its axis rotation and the moon speeding up its orbit, so that eventually one solar day will = one lunar month. How far into the future will that be? A million years? 20 million?
