Balance again.

We're not being given a choice between nuclear reactors and Mr. Fusion.

The likelihood of a transport accident--and to the best of my knowledge there has yet to be one in all these years--has to be weighed against the real economic and health consequences of continuing the large-scale burning of hydrocarbons and/or an energy shortage.

We are not going to conserve our way into running America on windmills.

I have no problem with nuclear power being heavily regulated, or maybe even standardized, by the government.

While the government doesn't really have a place telling me what light bulb to buy, if I decide I'm going to manufacture industrial chlorine gas on my property, there damn well better be some rules involved.

The depressing part of all this is that most of the technical, and even organizational questions have answers, or even infrastructure that's already in place. Other nations are handling all this. France reprocesses waste, and the environmentalists hate them, too.

Guarded facilities are a good solution, both for storage and reprocessing. Maybe even old military bases, already set up for storing nuclear weapons and materials. It's silly to worry about what's going to happen a thousand years from now. If civilization falls, nuclear waste in one isolated area of a desert is going to be the least of our problems.
