I've never had the good fortune to visit any of the great ruins of Europe and Asia, but I've spent quite a bit of time exploring the ancient pueblos and Anasazi sites of the American Southwest. You're right, there is something very special about those places, particularly the way they always seem to fit in so seamlessly with the magnificent landscapes they invariably seem to be located in.
