I think it's a mistake to compare ourselves now with us 8 years ago.
Economically are younger people better off? Clearly not, more and more only having minimum wage jobs available, two people in a family working them and still not doing well, with more people not having health insurance, and so on. The American Dream is farther away for younger folks now.
I had more civil rights, more trust in my government, more privacy and I thought only totalitarian regimes capable of torture and unwarranted aggression. In those regards I was therefore better off eight years ago. I didn't owe so much national debt, my nation wasn't burdened with such trade imbalances and the dollar was worth more.
My country was much more respected world-wide, etc. and so on.
How one political party could drag a proud nation right into a gutter so rapidly is one of the miracles of modern times.
