"Remember my saying about simple answers to big questions?"

How can I forget? It's the most obviously mistaken and wrong-headed part of your entire world view. And guess what? There is no way you can simply look something up and prove one of us is right and the other wrong, is there?

Research can tell you when and where each battle is fought, who won or lost, the weather, terrain, casualties, the personalities involved and the events which preceded and followed it. But it cannot tell you why the war was fought, or certainly not who SHOULD have won it. Sometimes those questions have no good answers, sometimes they aren't even proper questions at all, they're just grammatical constructions, illusions to delude us into thinking we understand what is going on.

Your entire post, and by extension, your entire philosophy, is based on
the concept of "right and wrong", "correct and incorrect". Even physics has gotten past such a simplistic view of reality. We no longer live in a Newtonian Universe, in fact we never did. We just thought we did because we believed in simple answers to big questions. And of course, we convieniently forgot that that point of view is just a philosophy, too, and an oversimplified one, at that. As long as the questions were simple, it worked.

No, I am not a relativist. I don't believe all philosophical systems of inquiry are equivalent and equally valid. When you do science, you match your hypotheses to the observations, which suggests additional observations and controlled experiments. You cannot do this with philosophy or art or politics or economics or psychology or anything which originates entirely from within the human universe. Even the idea that you can is often the means by which injustices are institutionalized. I can tentatively accept the laws of physics, at least until further research suggests amendments. In those other fields, there are no laws, principles or truths, and I am extremely supicious of those who claim there are.

Neither am I saying that we should simply roll over over and do nothing because complete knowledge is impossible. We are inhabitants of this human-centered universe and we have little choice but to participate in it. Let's just not delude ourselves into thinking our emotional prejudices are scientifically justified.
