"Individual rights and private ownership" do not necessarily follow from one to another. What is happening in China and Russia is the way Capitalism has usually manifested itself throughout history, a partnership of the merchants (or great landowners) and government. The losers: the workers, the consumers, and the small businessmen.
Actually, my opinions on this are not as different from yours as you probably suspect. I just get steamed when I get tarred with that same brush. Perhaps the greatest difference is that I am convinced that this is not a result of a conflict between the business community and the government, or of some ideological war between private enterprise and public power. I think both sides work together to their mutual benefit to wage war on the rest of us. Nothing is completely black and white, of course, but if you really need one overall guiding principle, that is it.
True collectivists are about as scarce as true entrepreneurs. I think they should work together, not be mortal enemies. "You may say I'm a dreamer...but I'm not the only one."
