According to my mom, my great grandmother always kept dead lightbulbs plugged into the sockets. She was poor, so she didn't always have enough good lightbulbs for every lamp and would swap out a good one for a bad, but always made sure that every socket was plugged with a bulb of somekind. She was afraid if the socket wasn't plugged, all the electricity would pour out.
