Considering the population of the world, as compared to the past, I think the Earth is less violent than it ever has been. More people are enjoying human rights and have the basics of life than ever before.
And we hear of everything that goes on all over the world. 200 years ago, if an Earthquake or war killed thousands of people, we might have never heard of it.
I think, for the most part, things are getting steadily better over time. There are downs, of course, but the trend keeps going up.
One day the world will come together. We’ll put all the resources, that we put into war, into improving our race. Perhaps we’ll even do great things like terraform Mars or turn the Sahara Desert into a rain forest.
Carl Sagan once said that it will not be us that leaves Earth and heads out into the galaxy. It will be beings (our descendants) that will be very much like us, except they will have more of our strengths and less of our weaknesses.
If we look at the human race on the scale of a person’s life, I would say we are in our teenage years. We are smart, but we are not yet mature and our responsibility levels are low. But we will grow up as a race.
