Take whatever comfort from the spin you can.
The Democrats wanted to give up. If Kerry had won, Iraq would have burned. If the Democrats had gotten enough seats in 2006 to shut down the war, Iraq would have burned.
But Bush didn't want to give up, and fought the Democrats all the way.
If the war in Iraq does turn out to be a success, this simple fact is not going to be easy for Democrats to bury.
Sure, Bush will get no official credit for it. The liberals who write the schoolbooks will edit him out as neatly as they edited Reagan out of the Cold War victory. But people remember what Reagan did.
