Amok Time

Reproducing the species is complicated, inconvenient, painful, and potentially dangerous. Nature ensures that we do it anyway by providing us with biological drives and instincts to make us carry it out regardless.

The capacity for rational thought, as well as the ability to figure out where babies come from, allows us to override these evolutionary imperatives, in the same way a dieter can repress his appetite for reasons of health or just to become fashionably thin. Incidentally, when reasoning about sexual behavior, it is often useful to substitute feeding behavior as an analogue to help us explore the sociobiological components of the behavior without confusing them with all the taboos and cultural nonsense we have imposed on sex due to a settled, agricultural existence.

The different roles the two sexes assume in human reproduction (impregnation and nurturing) have led to two separate instinctual mechanisms to create and protect children: men are given a ridiculously exaggeratted sex drive, women are provided with a desperate need to play with babies. No, these two drives are not perfectly separated by gender, most men like and want children and most women have a sex drive, but as a rule, these innate behaviors are allocated in this way to fit in with our earliest primate cultural roles and to make us get pregnant and spend a better part of our life force and allotted time in reproductive activity.

The problem comes when these instinctive drives cannot be properly channeled and controlled by cultural or conscious mechanisms. The desperate desire of men to copulate leads them to marry prematurely (by modern standards, anyway), and the desire of women to play the mommy game does little to stop them. Men marry the wrong women because they simply can't force themselves to wait a bit longer for sex, and a woman often fails to marry the perfect man for her because she cannot delay her desire to be a mother for a more appropriate time.

It isn't just Bowser or Alcaray that has lost a potential mate because of an adolescent woman's impatience to play house and refusal to wait just a few more years. Almost every man has.
