Good answer

1. An ethic that includes self-sacrifice to promote others' well-being

Salutary, but keep in mind that a principle of self-sacrifice doesn't automatically give one license to throw other people onto the altar for your ethic.

2) A belief that there really are a lot of things that ought to be done that only a government will do or do adequately well.

Conservatives feel this way, too. The difference seems to be in where the line for "a lot" falls. Too many people seem to feel that there is no aspect of human existence beyond the definition of "a lot."

It isn't a matter of government as such. It's a matter of degree.

I have raised the question to liberals many times, "At what point is the government big enough?" Nobody has ever really answered.
