All critters expand to new ecosystems. If they can adapt to them.
The way I picture it, this planet is an egg. It has enough resources, if used properly, to propell this species into the solar system. The solar system, in turn, has enough resources to send us to the stars. It'd be a difficult choice: resource for technology. Sell the egg white to crack the shell.
And it makes a perfect analogy for the political / economic situation of resource consumption of the present day. Third world countries make the deal then see their rewards squandered by tyrants on petty frivolities. But isn't this a role that Science Fiction has always succeed at doing? Projecting human traits upon a screen strung across the future? And speculating on the non-human drives. And what they have in common - Survival, expansion, progression, evolution.

but the drive to exploit resources is not.
