If it makes you feel any better, this kind of gotcha has been pulled on McCain (as I pointed out in a post a while back about his "100 years", comment, which I felt was reported just as unfairly), and it's been done to Obama, and Hillary, and all the candidates, Dem or Rep. It's yellow rag journalism. These people will pick anything and take it out of context to get a "scoop". And heaven forbid a tired or jetlagged candidate make a slip of the tongue or snaps out an ill-considered remark from fatigue or irritation, anger or frustration.
The opposing campaigns, of course, pick it up and play it for all it's worth. The MSM dissect everything that's said for effect, but they hardly ever take a good long look at the issues, or analyze carefully a candidate's position. The American people think that's "Booooooring".
Partisan media do this for propaganda, but the mainstream media does it for ratings. It sells commercial minutes, and the average Joe doesn't watch "Meet the Press".
You may think the MSM is biased, but I think it's much worse than that, it is mercenary. The news is no longer a loss leader for the networks who compete on prestige or reputation. It's now a ratings-driven infotainment business. They're in it strictly for the money, and it's gotten much worse since I started watching TV news seriously as a teenager. And in just the last few years, it's gotten intolerable. Political news is now reported the way sports, human interest, and entertainment gossip is reported.
The result is you get candidates who won't say anything, and we learn nothing.
