Hi Raoul
Nothing brings out mental biases like discussing whether animals have souls/sentience/consciousness. Since we can't ask them very directly we can only observe and extrapolate. I think it's useful to distinguish several kinds of 'soul' - nutritive, sensitive and intelligent. Thus plants share a nutritive soul with animals, while animals and humans also have a sensitive soul. What's different qualitatively is the mental construct humans form of the world around them, seen and unseen. There's only hints of that in animals, and only piecemeal. Something combined disparate elements in us to give us that extra step.
