Ridiculous comparisons to 1939 Nazi Germany are neither helpful nor a sound basis for effective diplomacy

McCain is clearly trying to score political points by greatly exagerating the virtues of the Georgians while unfairly vilifying the Russians. It's dangerous, it's a policy that may have helped cause an unneccesary bloody war, but it may win him votes.

Uttering statements like "When I look into Putin's eyes I see K-G-B" are silly and juvenile, and a cheap substitute for real statemenship. McCain clearly lacks the temperment to be a serious and responsible commander in chief. It's little wonder that the Europeans have no faith in McCain, and little interest in inviting Georgia into NATO at this time.

The problem is compounded when irresponsible governments like Georgia's, with a history of abusive treatment of their ethnic minorities, are eager to prostitute themselves to the US superpower, sending several thousand of their young men into a senseless and disasterous war merely to suck up to Uncle Sam, and are in return armed, trained, supported, encouraged and egged on by the US administration. Many Georgians probably now regret that Bush led them believe that they could do anything they wanted without consequences, merely because they had promises of support from the US.
