The defenders of utopian ideologies always explain away their failure to actually work by blaming the other guy. A pure "free enterprise" system never arises because those who tend to make it to the top are usually ruthless predators who don't give a fig about ideology and immediately set about doing everything they can to liquidate their competitors, or to get in cahoots with them and wage economic war on the rest of us. When the dewy-eyed boosters are confronted with the historical evidence, they usually respond with "Yes, but that wasn't a REAL free enterprise system."
Well DuHHHH! That's just the right-wing equivalent, of "Communism had some great ideas, it was just taken over by bad people." The truth is, there is no system that can survive being taken over by the ambitious and the ruthless and the clever. Milk tends to rise until it sours. The only way to avoid plutocracy, of left or right, is to use the law and the vote to supervise the oligarchy, take advantage of its dynamism, motivation and self-regulation, to make it as open as possible, but to prevent it from reverting to its natural condition when left to its own devices: parasitism.
