By George, I think he's got it!

Social sciences employ at least as much art as science, except in the area of statistics. Even there, the way of writing the question or the survey to gather the statistics also involves much more art than the formulation and testing of hypotheses in the hard sciences.

Criminology is a branch of sociology, and therefore a social science.

The practice of art requires much more use of the unconscious mind, with its peculiar way of sneaking up on reality sideways, and occasionally mistaking those things that cats chase for real objects. Art has also provided insight into new ways of looking at the world before science explains those new ways.

These disciplines are all related, but are not the same, and they must be recognized for what they are. With something like criminology, I think it's counterproductive to call it pseudoscience, because it has proven its worth when practiced properly, and there's nothing "pseudo" about that.

Every discipline can be used badly. The use of criminology to create profiles of possible criminals, rather than profiles of patterns of crime, have given sloppy or ignorant law enforcement a blunt instrument to use to classify large numbers of people unjustly. Quacks are everywhere.
