"No one stabs another person 20 times simply to kill them."

Unless that person is INTENTIONALLY trying to give the investigators a misleading impression ...

An extremely organized killer could stage his crimes to look disorganized and improvised simply to lead investigators to create a misleading profile...

I think it is unwise to use profiles to narrow down a pool of suspects- I think the proper use is to let facts and evidence determine your pool of suspects and then see how the profile applies.

In Asimov's Foundation series he had the science of Psychohistory.... a statistical/psychological science that could predict the future of human civilization- one of the rules of the science was that it would not work if the population was aware of the science....

Criminal Profiling becomes self defeating when the criminal is aware of the techniques used to profile him.
