Obviously that could happen. And when is the last time you heard of that?
As I have said repeatedly, profiling is not perfect, and never will be perfect and could even be used to mask the perp.
And it would be interesting to know the type of person who was simply out to see that another person was dead, and instead of shooting or poisoning them would stab them that much. Stabbing and strangling require personal contact, often distasteful to the dispassionate killer unless there is a certain pathology.
At any rate, you certainly are correct in the abstract. I've never heard of it in the more concrete universe, though it's possible.
