Something along those lines might explain Fermi's paradox....

The idea being that some discovery, or experiment that would naturally be done by any race on their way to exploring the universe invariably turns out to be fatal to that civilization...

A sort of technological booby-trap that invariably kills the curious cat....

Its a worry that may deserve serious consideration because if it is the case, then we will be facing that danger very soon...
