Current Events » in reply to List of Books Sarah Palin wanted Banned from the Wasilla Library

The real farce.

Librarians are upset about banning because that's their department and they don't want any amateurs horning in.

Sure, the librarians are all impartial. Impartial about purchases, renewals, subscriptions and which books are "obsolete."

I have fun with my local librarians. I look at the "book sale" section which is always a great indicator of what books the librarians dislike. Limbaugh, Ayn Rand, O'Reilly, Coulter, Ronald Reagan books, Goldwater's autobiography, etc - all being disposed because of flaws such as a single page with a tear, or a loose page or some other minor disfiguring condition such as a pen mark across the title page. (Librarian induced? Horrors no! Never!)

One funny one had the library sticker placed right over Ayn Rand's face on the Ayn Rand's letters book. The entire cover to choose from and they found the best spot!

So I check and see if the books are still in the system, replaced by better copies. So far 3 or so of the 30 or so I have checked had a duplicate copy in the library. When I feel so moved I donate new copies of the disfigured books. Not by themselves of course - but with other tomes from the local Barnes & Noble to mask the political overtones of the contribution.

More often than not, the politically biased books make it straight to the book sale section within a few days. Very rarely do they make it into the system, even if they are replacing a book so discarded due to "damage." Other times they simply disappear without a trace. I suspect the dumpsters get fed a diet of "incorrect" reading material.

Who needs a Governor to "talk" about banning books when so many librarians all over the nation are already subtly determining what is not fit for those who come throught their doors?

;-)

PS
Yeah, I know...this seems like a poke at MA...who would never let her political leanings influence content. But it's not. It's a poke at all those indignant librarians who DO let their political leanings influence content. And, yes, I know there are those conservative librarians (okay .002%) who probably influence content in their neck of the woods too.
