You're having the mother of all economic downturns. A full-fledged crash, perhaps a depression.

Why not cap it off with a civil war or a putsch and have some strong-man come into power and promise the population "Bread and Circuses"...

What do you think is happening right now? A Savior is running for President, and he's saying Americans can have anything they want, and it will all be paid for by people they don't like.
