Anyone have any beginner camera suggestions?

I'd like a beginners digital camera, optical zoom, optical viewfinder, high megapixel, image stabilization and maybe something which demonstrates what the various effects are.

I don't always understand what the effect I'm choosing will have on the picture, or what the thing does. An icon with clouds, for instance, doesn't translate into anything I can use.
