The GOP is switching constituencies...

from boardroom to Bubba, from the country club to NASCAR. The upper classes were never big enough, and the middle class is shrinking drastically. They have to go looking for votes somewhere. Their elaborately crafted depiction of the Democratic constituency as the "rich liberal elite" may be a natural and very deliberate consequence of this shift.

For decades, the American Dream has been that the children of the factory worker would move to an office job, but the offices are now bloated with unproductive paper shufflers and the factories are shutting down. What's left?, the service sector and its insecure, low-paying, mind-numbing and soul-killing McJobs?

We may not see this and our personal situation may not reflect it, but we are at the peak of our careers, beneficiaries of the post-war boom. That party is over, and the kids, our kids, coming into the work force now expect to live at least as well as their parents did. They are ready to be led.
